Here at Scarborough Surf School we are looking for a friendly team member to help out in the peak season which runs from Easter through to mid September. This is a great opportunity for anyone who is looking to gain experience in leading outdoor activities and Surf Coaching as well as developing skills in the customer service sector.

Scarborough Surf School is the largest provider of Surfing lessons and Coasteering sessions on the Yorkshire coast, if you add a growing demand for Stand up Paddle Boarding plus a very busy Hire and Retail shop to that you can imagine how hectic it can get around here!

So what will you be doing?

Your role here will be hugely varied so we have listed the primary responsibilities.

Delivering Surfing and Stand up Paddle Board lessons in both private and group sessions, in a safe and professional manner.
Assisting with Coasteer sessions to a large variety of groups of all ages.
Working in the Shop dealing with customers, advising on products and taking bookings with accurate information.
Maintaining the Surf School site, keeping it clean and presentable.
Above all you will make sure all our customers are 100% satisfied with any service they receive from Scarborough Surf School.

Working at Scarborough Surf School can be demanding and hard work but you will be working with fun like minded people who love what they do, we have a wealth of experience to pass on plus the following benefits.

We will fully train and qualify you to be a level 1 Surf Instructor and Surf Lifesaver this is yours forever and enables you to work all over the world!
You will also get a record of hours as a Coasteering guide should you wish to develop your CV.
Possibility of becoming a Stand Up Paddle Board Coach, dependant on current skills.
40hrs a week work spread over 5 days, additional hours may be required.
A good hourly rate of pay dependent on experience.

It was a dark January evening with a cold, howling easterly wind that the idea was first born for ‘King of the Point’.
What if we could have a surf contest, different to the normal tried and tested format, where like the WSL we had a waiting period. Not just any waiting period, but one that would encompass the fickle and cruel nature of life as an east coast surfer and stretch for nearly six months to hopefully get epic conditions.
The plan was to get east coast surfers to interact with each other to surf two of our point breaks hopefully in one day and crown someone ‘King of the Point’ who then had bragging rights till the following year. Fast forward to December 9th 2017 and that plan was reality. The week before we saw the potential perfect day and started making preparations tentatively fully expecting Storm Caroline to change her track and foil our best laid plans. After much frantic chart watching it was looking like there was a window in our so far unheard of excellent start to winter surfing and that conditions could be pretty solid for the Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning of the weekend 9/10th December.

Phone calls to competitors were hastily made to everyone and inevitably some places became available to new entrants due to work/life commitments which were eagerly snapped up.
Saturday morning we rocked up and were greeted with something pretty rare on the east coast. A clean lined up 14-second long range groundswell in the 8-10ft range graced our sight with the tide dropping and the first heat in the water at 11.30am. As ever, things were pretty loose format wise but we ended up with 18 competitors from all over the east coast and with the daylight hitting us early we came up with a 70-minute heat of 6 surfers taking us through till darkness.
Heats were drawn and guns pulled out and the first heat hit the water with stand out performances from Jesse Davies showing no fear or regard to his safety as normal, Danny Allott from Newcastle seeming at ease in the well overhead waves and James Cummings pulling into an absolute bomb and not making it out. Louis Hudson, son of east coast legend, Steve Hudson of Tynemouth Surfshop also grabbed a fair few bombs out there in the solid conditions. Local guy Jamo Taylor snagged a few to show his local knowledge and surfed real well.
Heat two saw a group who were pretty much all from the local area and great rivalry ensued with Delboy, South African Mike, Joss Wescombe, ex SecretSpot employees Jack Chatterton and James Turner and the poshest speaking surfer on the east coast Posh Tom Wilson and what ensued was a pure spectacle to watch with competitors pushing each other in perfect conditions.
Heat three with the tide now pushing had great performances from youngster Ben Tucker seeming at ease in the big surf, shop manager Scotty getting a few heavy closeouts and young Evan Rogers,bson of east coast and Saltburn Surf shop legend Gary Rogers, looking super comfortable. Andy Hogg from Scarborough and Tynemouth legend and Patagonia Surf Manager Gabe Davies making an appearance. Gabe sat up the point taking the outside bombs and sometimes seemed to have effortless speed making sections disappear, whilst Evan sat a little further inside and caught the wider sets sometimes running through the whole way.
With the heats now over, we made the call to cancel the next days session at another local point as storm Caroline had changed its course and was delivering an ugly easterly wind overnight. Better to finish on a high and the competitors and a fair few spectators made the short trip to a local pub, the Hayburn Wyke for real ale and JDs in front of an open fire and the inaugural first crowning of #KOTP.
Here it was great to see how a group of guys who turned up earlier not really knowing each other were now seeming like old friends and the banter and laughs that ensued were testament to this.
The contest had really generously been supported by Ripcurl and Patagonia and the prizes were pretty awesome with a new 6/4 Flashbomb wetsuit, jackets, impact vests which deservedly went to Jesse, and a whole heap of accessories from both companies and everybody seemed to get prizes worth way more than their entry fee. Over £300 from entries was raised and is been donated to SAS.
So, who won. Well technically Gabe Davies won by a 0.6 margin over local guy Posh Tom Wilson, but with Gabe working for Patagonia he kindly conceded the prizes to Tom and effectively shared the title of KING OF THE POINT until next year.
But in our eyes, we don’t need to crown a winner. Everyone who turned up, took part or spectated was a winner on that day. From little acorns grow big trees so see y’all next year for KING OF THE POINT! Yeeeeeeeeeew!

So last week it was time for our annual jaunt down south the land of Tagines, Sun Surf and well lots of sheep this time!

This is my 6th trip to Morocco but my first time venturing South of Agadir to escape the crowds up North, so after a brief 4hr flight we pick up our wheels (which appeared to be a toy car but was in fact a real one!) and hit the road, and in true style the road soon turned into a track which snaked through the southern end of the Anti-Atlas mountain range and another 4hrs later brought us to Sidi Ifni.

Sidi is a small ex Spanish colonial town, we found it super friendly and laid back, basically there is nothing to do but eat drink and surf, which is perfect!

There is a beach point and reef in town but the best spots we found were along the 20km of coast to the north where clear blue empty waves were found on the dozens of secluded spots and a decent 4×4 is a must to access some of them.

The swell was in the 3ft range everyday which lit up the beach breaks perfectly, imagine very good Bunkers everyday in 21 degree water!
The south is better on a small swell so if you are planning a trip to Morocco it is well worth a look for some super fun hassle free waves, accommodation is cheap and plentiful and there is a new coast road which makes the drive back up north a bit less traumatic than the mountain pass!

For those who have not noticed the wave-riders of the East coast have been spoilt by continuous surf and off shore winds for the last 4 weeks, and still the charts predict more to come!

We seem to be in a weekly pattern of small fun waves midweek followed by increasing swell over the weekends epic conditions every Monday and Tuesday!??

There have been plenty of epic sessions going down with Surfers from all over the UK and Europe flocking for a piece of the action…

First of all a big Thanks to everyone who came to see us over the Summer and took part in our activities, we hope you had a blast as we certainly did!

It only seems fair that after working hard all Summer the team (Scotty & Carl) had chance for a bit of R&R? So the plan was put into place (By Tommo) first of all a civilized meal out followed by a quick climb up Mt Snowdon and then Two days at Surf Snowdonia with the FCS boys and Surf Photographer G what could possibly go wrong?

After a hearty meal of Steak and a few bottles of plonk we managed about Two hours sleep on a sofa somewhere on the way to Wales before we set off to find this big Mountain, the three of us had seen better days! I had a severe limp and Scotties knees are not know for their reliability but luckily our leader had all the equipment and motivation to make this happen……Yes!

So we arrived to drizzle and a thickening mist, but not to worry we had faith in our leader, he had indeed brought some walking boots and er some walking boots, never mind the drizzle was not too bad and off we went!

We did however have plenty of nutrition, 1 bottle of water, a packet of wine gums and 3 mars bars I had acquired from the surf school!

Skip forward 5hrs and yes we had not only scaled this huge hill but returned in one piece! The view at the top could only be described as limited, but the camaraderie was something beautiful!

Back at basecamp lessons were learned for next time

• Take waterproofs
• Take Food
• Check weather
• Do NOT take expensive phones which get wet and ruined! (2 IPhones lost their lives on this trip!)

So onwards to Surf Snowdonia to play! We were certainly spoiled by the FCS crew, boards and fins to play with and a wave which never closes out!

We even got to share a small wooden POD together which was quite frankly rather disturbing but I guess that’s what team building is all about?!!
